Tanning for the Wool and Taxidermy Industries

Lonestar Wool & Fur was started in April of 2004 when David Patton purchased the sheep tannery in Greenville, Maine known as Moosehead Tannery. Bill Dallam had owned and operated Moosehead for six years before moving into other markets. The original tannery in Maine was Kennebec Wool started by Dale Knobloch well before Bill gained ownership. This tannery was the first tannery to develop the exclusive tan that has been passed on from owner to owner and now is being used in Lonestar Wool & Fur.
The tradition of Kennebec Wool has brought product quality and great customer relations to the agricultural and taxidermy community in the industry of tanning for many years.
Lonestar Wool & Fur has a business goal of carrying the Kennebec and Moosehead traditions into the future and will strive to be competitive in the custom sheep hide tanning and taxidermy tanning industries.
David first began his career in taxidermy tanning in January of 1982 as a shaver in a small Texas tannery called Con-Tan. The tannery was located in David's hometown of Conroe, Texas. After eight years of operation, that tannery was dissolved and the machinery was sold to Quality Fur Dressing and Advantage Fur Dressing, both in Texas. David moved to a large tannery in North Carolina and worked 17 years to continue building his knowledge of taxidermy tanning.
Today, David has successfully operated his tannery in Smithfield, North Carolina as a result of his extensive training in the taxidermy tanning industry. The addition of the sheep tanning business from Moosehead Tannery was an unexpected bonus that enables the tannery to prosper during the cyclical down swing of hunting seasons. The washable tan that David offers sheep and goat growers is highly sought after and well received in the wool and fiber industry.
Lonestar Wool & Fur greatly appreciates the business that you as a customer bring to us. Without you, we would not be able to continue this valuable service to the taxidermists, wool, and fur industry.
Thank You!
